All right, this is the starting of my new project- a comic of my own.
When a strange things start happening, Reuben can't help but feel that things are going horribly wrong in the world. People go missing, reappearing days later as merely sacks of flesh with no bone; swarms of bats start to migrate towards London city from all over the world- and he keeps getting plastic body parts in the post.
One day, the torso and head of the mannequin arrive to make up the set, and he fast realises that the doll is living, and that she may have some vital ties to his forgotten past, the death of his parents, and the people around him who are going being killed.
Torn between being a normal human being and someone with the power to help stop the madness around him, he's rejoined by an old friend, and some new ones to help him make his decision and put the world's latest enemy to rest.
He'd have thought people would have started to take out insurance policies against shit like this...
Poor, poor plot outline. Forgiveness- it's a lot more complicated than that, in my head.
I'll try name the characters, though they're subject to change, and it's strictly only for reference really- 'cause only one of them has a name for definite.
Centre: Main character, Reuben. He can turn at will into shadow stuffs- as you can see- but it's left him with dyed veins around his eyes and up his throat, so he avoids going outside when he's not wearing his skull mask (bottom left). Issue-filled and slightly bipolar, he grew up in an orphanage (don't they always?) and had only one friend- a mysterious, rather sardonic boy called Kaspar.
Aside from this, Reuben is an aspiring artist, but in the meantime he works long shifts at any job he can find.
Reuben doesn't have a crimefighting name yet- he struggles upholding one identity, let alone two- but as Kaspar says, 'How can people fear you if they don't know who you are?'
To which Reuben always replies: 'I don't want them to fear me.'
Yeah. He's one of those.
Centre left: Il Giocattolo, 'Toy', A.K.A Dexter. She's a girl, sure, but one day when she arrived on Reuben's doorstep in a box, he assembled her and all she knew was that her name was Dexter. So he let her be Dexter. Naive and insufferably perky, she is useless as a superhero, but great as a mannequin.
Centre right: The Cadaver, A.K.A Kaspar. As Reuben's only friend, he feels a reluctant sense of duty towards him. When they were boys, Kaspar commited suicide, leaving Reuben quite alone, before somehow (read: you'll find out in the comic) being reanimated, doomed to spend the rest of his days as a still-demcomposing corpse until he can restore his humanity, stolen by his cruel nature and the life he took.
Already dead, he is pretty much impossible to put down in a fight- and on top of that, he's a total asshole, and they're never easy to kill.
It's uncertain as to whether he's really on Reuben's side, actually. Hmm.
Background Left: Rueben.
Background Top Right: Dexter.
Background Bottom Right: The Cadaver (he prefers it to his old identity).
Background Centre: Jasper. You'll just have to wait to find out about him, won't you?
There we go. Just a taster. Notice the crossovers? Yeah. Yeah. If you've read my (unfinished) fic 'Kaspar' on my old site () you'll know what I mean. Intrigued?
I really want to hear feedback on this, so I'll put up a new journal and please drop by and give me a comment, some concrit, if you like what you see? This is just lineart- expect a coloured version soon. XD
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
